The Gnostic Secret Wasn't Hidden Knowledge. It Was Knowing Who You Are.
Gnosticism has a reputation for secrecy: hidden scriptures, divine names, Aeons and Archons, Sophia, the Demiurge, secret revelations, and cosmologies complicated enough to make a modern occult correspondence table look restrained.
That reputation is deserved. But I think concentrating on the secrets can obscure a more fundamental problem running through the texts.
The problem is identity.
Scholars have long discussed Gnostic ideas of self-knowledge, divine origin, ignorance, and remembrance. Hans Jonas, Elaine Pagels, Michael Williams, and others have approached these themes from different directions. I am not suggesting that scholars failed to notice the importance of self-knowledge in Gnostic literature.
My argument is narrower.
Across texts belonging to quite different Gnostic and related traditions, human bondage repeatedly involves misidentification. People forget their origin. Powers claim ownership over beings they do not properly recognize. Names can be attached to the wrong realities. Garments conceal identity or are mistaken for identity. Ritual seals and sacred names establish belonging.
These texts should not be collapsed into a single "Gnostic religion." The Gospel of Philip and Gospel of Truth are associated with Valentinian Christianity. The Apocryphon of John and Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit belong to the Sethian tradition. Thomas, Mary, Judas, and Pistis Sophia have their own histories and theological settings. They disagree about plenty.
That makes the recurrence of the same underlying question more interesting:
Do you actually know what you are?
